MADISON, Wis. — Couples who have engaged in virtual weddings in recent years are also more satisfied living in a virtual marriage so they can continue to do what they want, researchers at the University of Wisconsin have discovered.

“It’s the best of both worlds — the virtual world and the real world,” said Dr. Jeremy Caller, head of the university’s School of Cultural Studies. “Couples who make the vow to spend the rest of their lives together are finding them easier to keep if they don’t actually have to be around each other.

“It’s a fact that divorce rates are much higher for couples who actually have to be together, day in and day out, in the same home, physically sharing a life,” Caller continued. “That’s stressful and in many cases, it’s just not conducive to a happy, healthy, productive marriage.”

With the current outbreak of COVID-19, Caller said he expects to see a deluge of virtual weddings and, subsequently, seeing those couples living together only virtually.

“Now it’s possible to live virtual lives, but still remain in the real world so you can satisfy your own desires and urges without having to really worry about anything,” Caller said. “Frankly, as an advanced society, I don’t know why we didn’t think of it sooner.”
