DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — As master of ceremonies for this year’s biggest NASCAR event, the Daytona 500, President Trump opened by singing a pitch-perfect rendition of an American favorite, “Amazing Grace.”
As First Lady Melania Trump and Secret Service agents looked on, Trump masterfully belted out the stanzas as the gathered race crowd mostly looked on silently, and in awe, as fighter jets roared overhead.
The president was backed up by a Singaporean orchestra, which was already in town for a separate concert gig.
“I didn’t think he had it in him,” said one Secret Service agent who refused to give us his name. “I’ve been with the guy going on a year now, and I didn’t think he could carry a tune in a suitcase.”
Up in the stands, it was obvious many fans were moved.
“I tell you, he just continues to amaze me,” Selma Owens, a lifelong NASCAR fan who flew in from Memphis on Saturday. “It was just…beautiful, beautiful,” she added, wiping away a tear.
“Dang, man, that boy can sing,” Clem Foster, an auto mechanic from Waynesboro, Ga., said. “Wonder if he’ll have time to sing the National Anthem at the Firekeepers Casino 400 up in Michigan later this year?”
