(LOUISVILLE, Ky.) After GOP Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell announced this week that he’s no longer capable of serving in the Senate, he went on to say that he would continue serving in the Senate.
“I realize I have more days behind me than I do in front of me and I know I’ve had some health issues I’ve been dealing with for the past few years, so that’s why I’m stepping down — sort of,” McConnell said during a press conference.
“I know I can no longer serve as an effective leader in the Senate but by golly, I know I can still serve and I’m going to continue to do that, even if it’s from a back bench from now on,” he added.
Asked why he thought he couldn’t be leader but could still be a senator, McConnell got somewhat testy.
“Look, don’t try to conflate the two, alright?” he snapped. “They are two completely different roles. In one, I have to get up and talk a lot in front of you people, and in the other, I can have my little ‘episodes’ in private, away from the limelight.”
At that, McConnell froze for what seemed like a full minute before finally regaining some semblance of consciousness.
“What was I saying? Oh, never mind. It doesn’t matter,” McConnell said before being led away from the podium by staffers.
