(HUNTSVILLE, Ala.) A self-avowed atheist has claimed he’s being “persecuted” for his “lack of religion” after being ticketed by police for driving 80 mph in a school zone.
“There’s no doubt in my mind, this is anti-religious persecution,” Courtney Knight, 37, said. “I mean, come on. Do you really think they’d stop a Christian who was driving this fast in a school zone — or anywhere, for that matter? In the Bible Belt? No way in the world that would happen.
“It’s straight-up persecution for my beliefs. That’s all this is, and you can’t convince me otherwise. Those cops are under orders to root out all non-believers, and I’m, frankly, sick and tired of it,” Knight ranted. “This kind of persecution is not supposed to happen in the 21st century. I should have the right to drive as fast as I want, wherever I want, without fear of being punished for what I believe.”
Sgt. Pete Jackson refuted Knight’s allegations and said that officers were not aware of the driver’s religious beliefs prior to him being stopped after almost plowing into a departing school bus.
“That said, maybe he needs Jesus, though, the way he drives,” Jackson added.
