(WASHINGTON) President Joe Biden welcomed Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Mrs. Jodie Haydon to the White House for a State Dinner this week because the country really has “a cool flag.”
“We understand it’s a very long trip for the prime minister and his wife to make, but the president just happened to see the Australian flag in the storage room the other day and said, ‘That’s really cool – let’s see if we can get him to come to Washington so we can display it!” said a spokesperson who only identified herself as “Laura.”
“He’s the president so he gets what he wants,” she added. “Whether it’s a reason to display a country’s flag or rocky road ice cream, his wish is our command. Everyone knows that.”
Asked how he felt about traveling halfway around the world for such a trivial reason, PM Albanese didn’t seem bothered at all.
“Well, the truth is, we don’t display our flag that much in our country, and certainly not as Americans do with their flag in their country, so quite honestly, it was worth the trip just to see it hanging at the White House,” he said.
Albanese added that he and Biden “really didn’t discuss much” in terms of foreign policy, the emerging threats in Asia, and the war in Ukraine, “but the steak tar tar we had for supper was really top-shelf.”
The PM said he and his wife planned to jump back aboard their plane and head home after taking a photo in front of the Australian flag. “It’s been a good three-hour visit,” he said.
