(COLUMBIA, Mo.) A new study by the University of Missouri found that “standardized tests” were not responsible for crappy test scores among U.S. students, but rather crappy teaching was at fault.
“There’s a reason why most American high school students don’t know how to read, write, and do basic math effectively,” Dr. Cliff Roberts, a professor of education who led the study, said. “They’re not being taught those things. Simple as that.
“Oh, sure, most educators today will tell you they’re teaching kids these basic educational elements, but test scores don’t lie — teacher’s unions do,” he continued.
Roberts went on to say that while it’s unreasonable to expect every child to perform at a high level, “it’s also unreasonable to set the bar so low that a high school senior who can’t read the words ‘high school senior’ is given a diploma.”
He said he and his research team also came up with solutions to help fix the widespread problem.
“The very first thing we need to do is get rid of public schools,” he noted. “Everything else from that point on will be an improvement.”
