(ST. LOUIS, Mo.) A Missouri-based organization has launched an effort to impose an age limit of 105 on members of Congress and the presidency, arguing that anyone older than that poses significant risks to the country.
“We are in a time now where Americans are living longer lives, but come on,” said Vance Lewis, head of Americans For Younger Leaders, said in a statement. “Some members of Congress are clearly too old to serve in any functional capacity, and if we don’t impose an age limit, they will continue to be elected until their minds are gone.
“We already see that now,” Lewis continued, an apparent reference to President Joe Biden and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.). “And these guys are nowhere near 105. But we just feel if we don’t impose some sort of age limit, we’re gonna get to a point where these lifer politicians will continue serving well into their 110s and 120s.”
The White House is opposed to the initiative.
“Age is just a number,” a spokesperson for the administration said. “Granted, very often it’s a big number, but it’s still just a number. Doesn’t mean someone can’t continue to contribute to serving their country.
“This is just the first phase. We know that this group won’t be satisfied at 105. The next thing you know, they’ll be pushing for age limits of 90, 80 — hell, maybe even 75. That’s just age discrimination and we won’t ever support that,” the spokesperson added.
