(Washington, D.C.) Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg declared that the massive cargo ship that took out the middle portion of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore was “incredibly racist.”
“If a bridge was constructed thus that buses and private vehicles carrying mostly black and Puerto Rican Americans to a beach, or what would have been, in Maryland or New York, and that bridge was designed to collapse when struck by a ship crewed by white people, that obviously reflects racism that went into the design choices for that bridge,” he said.
“I don’t think we have anything to lose by confronting that simple reality, and I think we have everything to gain by acknowledging it and then dealing with it, which is why the ‘Reconnecting Communities’ — that billion-dollars — is something we want to get to work right away rebuilding that bridge so that white people don’t ruin life for Americans of color,” he added.
Buttigieg then proposed only allowing illegal immigrants and other “migrants of color” to bid on rebuilding the bridge “so that the taxpayer gets the best deal for their money.”
