(Washington, D.C.) Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg says the only reason why electric vehicle sales are falling around the country is because “people just don’t like me.”

In an interview on Fox News, Buttigieg also blamed Republicans, Donald Trump, and whoever happens to be the next three GOP presidential nominees for the issue.

“Look, I’m happy to talk about this subject because I think it’s important to get the truth out there,” Buttigieg began. “We’ve done a lot of market research on this, and if it weren’t for the Republican smear machine — which your network is involved in, by the way — there would be a lot more EV sales.”

Buttigieg went on to deny that the high cost of EVs, anxiety about their poor range, batteries being drained quickly in cold weather, and few charging stations were why sales were down.

“No, it’s none of those issues. It’s me. Republicans just don’t like me so they’re not gonna buy an EV unless we force them to do so, which President Biden is, of course, trying to do,” he continued. “Our market research proves that.”

Asked to respond, new RNC chief Michael Whatley said, “Well, he’s right, we don’t like him. But we also prefer big, meaty V-8s. Why drive a Tesla when you could have a Dodge Challenger Hellcat Redeye?”
