OTTAWA — Canadian police responding to a call of a crying child were surprised when they arrived to find a goat with his head stuck in a fence. Police say a local resident called them early in the evening January 27 to report that a child was crying loudly in a wooded area north of his property. But when they arrived, no child could be found and the crying was no longer audible. Upon investigation, police say they eventually spoke to a neighbor who told them that his goat had gotten his head stuck in his fence a few hours…

WASHINGTON, DC — House impeachment manager Adam Schiff claimed during closing arguments Monday that if Republican senators failed to impeach President Trump, he would give Alaska to the Russians. “Trump could offer Alaska to the Russians in exchange for support in the next election,” he said. “After all, everyone knows that Russia fixed the election to help him,” Schiff continued. “They’re that good. They can rig every election in every single district in all 50 states. That’s what happened.” Later Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin acknowledged that indeed, Alaska was once part of his country, but if had his preference,…
MOHICAN STATE PARK — A park ranger in Ohio is being praised for making life just a little bit better for the state’s wildlife. Ranger Steve Jordon is winning praise from animal rights groups after building a swimming pool for forest creatures. Jordan, who said that he used his own funds to build the pool, assured reporters he wasn’t just another liberal “rights guy.” “For me, it was more about trying to give something back to things that have given so much to me,” Jordan said recently as a deer frolicked in the water behind him. “I think a lot…
WASHINGTON, DC — As the Democratic caucuses kick off in Iowa and the party’s 2020 presidential nomination process gets underway, top candidates are complaining that Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders is pulling in more of their voters than they can muster. Last week, Sanders managed to pack some 3,000 Democratic voters into a venue near Des Moines, Iowa, while just a few days earlier, former Vice President Joe Biden had trouble filling up a living room. And recent polling has him tying or topping the leading Democrats. “You know, this really isn’t fair at all,” complained Biden on Monday as Democrat…
JEFFERSON CITY — In an effort to cut energy costs, Missouri officials have decided to shroud the state Capitol building in a giant roll of food wrap. As energy costs have continued to rise in recent years, Missouri legislators and officials have been looking for new and innovative ways to save money. When the giant food wrap idea was first proposed by a local environmental group, officials scoffed at the idea. But eventually it caught on when other suggestions like tax increases to cover the added expense or simply turning down the thermostat this winter didn’t gain traction. “I have…
DES MOINES — After announcing last week that she would let a transgender teen pick her secretary of education, 2020 Democratic presidential contender Elizabeth Warren said Sunday ahead of the Iowa caucuses she has a 10-year-old girl in mind to become her national security adviser. While she didn’t name the child over concerns about privacy, Warren told reporters her choice would be perfect for her and for the country. “Listen, this kid is sharp,” Warren insisted. “And she’s tough. She’s not going to take any guff from anyone.” When asked how Warren came to her choice, the candidate responded, “I…
Americans anxiously awaited the appearance of groundhog Punxsutawney Phil early Sunday to see just how much longer winter is expected to last, but they got another prediction instead. As the ceremony to determine whether Phil would or would not see his shadow got underway in Punxsutawney, Pa., officials determined that he could not, signaling an early end to winter. But groundhog expert Rune Johnson offered another take on Phil’s prediction, noting that he detected a subtle change in the animal’s demeanor. “I believe Phil has an additional message for us this year,” Johnson told reporters. “And frankly, I think it’s…
